The most common question I am asked is: Why did my handicap go down when I shot a bad score this past week? First of all, your handicap is based on your last five scores in the league (going back to last season if necessary). So your handicap change is based not only on the score you just shot but also on the score that is being dropped (six scores ago). So basically, if the score being dropped is higher than the one you just shot regardless of how high the most recent score is, then your handicap will go down. Conversely, if the score being dropped is lower than the one you just shot regardless of how low the most recent score is, then your handicap will go up. Also coming into play is that we use USGA equitable stroke control (see details here). So if you have a six handicap, then any hole score above a 7 will only count as a 7 towards your handicap. So, you might think you just shot a 45 this past week, but it only counts as a 43 towards your handicap because you had a 9 on a hole.
