A quick refresher for everyone on the drop rules for various penalty areas:
For out-of-bounds (white stakes), you may re-hit your ball from the same spot you just hit from and take one penalty stroke. You may also drop the ball anywhere between the spot the ball went out of bounds and two club lengths within the fairway at the fairway spot closest to where the ball went out and take TWO penalty strokes. Yes, you can actually drop your ball in the fairway using this rule.
For water hazards (yellow stakes), you may re-hit your ball from the same spot you just hit from or you may take back-on-the-line relief which is a line that extends back from the point at which your ball entered the penalty area and keeps the pin between you and that spot (there is no such thing as line-of-flight relief). You may drop within one club length of this line no closer to the hole and take one penalty stroke. So if you go into the pond on #15, the line would go back towards #14 green, not #15 tee. Since you get one club length, you can choose to drop one club length no closer to the hole from the spot where it went in. This also applies to balls that cross a water hazard and then fall back in (#2 and #9 for example). You can drop on the far side, but cannot drop closer to the hole than the spot it crossed back into the hazard.
For lateral water hazards, you have the same two options as yellow hazards, but you can also drop two club lengths no closer to the hole from the spot it went into the hazard (so effectively one extra club length than a yellow hazard) and take one penalty stroke.
With the new rule in our league where we can move a ball one club length no closer to the hole, you effectively get one extra club length to move your ball for any rule above - again no closer to the hole and you cannot change the cut of grass that you move to.
