A reminder about our rules. We play winter rules everywhere excluding the green, the fringe around the green and any hazard (yellow or red stakes). If you intend to hit it out of the hazard, you must play the ball as it lies. Winter rules for our league used to mean moving the ball up to six inches, but we have changed that to be up to a club length no closer the hole. This gives you more flexibility to move away from a tree trunk, roots, stones or bare dirt. No one should be damaging their clubs or hurting themselves in order to hit a shot in league. However, you must keep it in the same type of lie (grass). You cannot move a ball from the rough to the fairway or vice versa. In my start of season email, I stated you can't move it from really tall grass to the regular rough, but I am walking that back. It doesn't make sense if we are moving a club length now. The tall grass only exists when the course is behind on trimming and often exists around tree trunks where we are moving the ball to avoid the tree trunk and roots. Also, if your ball ends up in the middle of one of the stone hedgerows, even though that may not be marked as a hazard, you cannot use winter rules to move it a club length, that would be considered an unplayable lie and a one stroke penalty to move it. Use your best judgement as the spirit of this rule is not meant to get you out of trouble (in a hedgerow for example), but to give you some flexibility when you get a bad break (land in a big bare spot when the course is really dry for example). If there is doubt, check with your opponents. Next week I'll refresh everyone's memory on the procedures for dropping a ball when you don't hit it out of the hazard.
